What is a Gastroenterologist?

A Gastroenterologist is a specialist fully trained in internal medicine, who has had additional, special and extensive training in the field of gastroenterology. Gastroenterology covers disorders of the entire gastrointestinal tract, including:

  • esophagus
  • stomach
  • duodenum
  • small bowel and colon
  • liver
  • gallbladder
  • pancreas

A Gastroenterologist has had an average of 12 to 15 years advanced education and two to three years spent acquiring special knowledge and skills in gastroenterology.

What makes a Gastroenterologist different?

The unique training that Gastroenterologists complete provides them with the ability to deliver high quality, comprehensive care for patients with a wide variety of gastrointestinal ailments.  Gastroenterologists have access to research involving gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures, as well as, the interpretation of results.

According to The American College of Gastroenterology…gastroenterologists perform high quality colonoscopy examinations and comprehensive consultative services.

This translates into more accurate detection of polyps and cancer by colonoscopy. As a result there are fewer complications from procedures and fewer days in the hospital for many gastrointestinal conditions managed by trained gastroenterology specialists.
